The Soundtrack Project:
Never be Shaken

In 2007, the Bisceglia sisters had the opportunity to create the soundtrack for a
47 minute drama produced by several home-schooling families.  Though it did not receive an award, the film was chosen out of approximately 130 films as a finalist in the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival and was shown at the festival to a packed theatre!
The girls share about their experiences below.

On March 7, 2007 Janna answered a phone call that was to change our life for the next four months.  Our pen pal, Keslie Couch, called to tell us her family and two other home-schooled families were making a film to enter in the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival and they wanted us to create the soundtrack!  As we began planning and creating, we were awed how God orchestrated a myriad of small events to make this long-cherished dream possible.

How does one create a soundtrack?  For us, watching the film clips was very important.  We analyzed the actors' looks, actions, and dialogue, thinking about what emotion the scene portrayed.  After watching the first scene, we searched for a song that "spoke" Ireland yet was not so well known as to conjure up other images.  After playing through many tunes, we found an O'Carolan tune, Bridget Cruise.  Each time we played it with film it improved.  It was not too sad or too joyful and it was most definitely Irish.  Yet we felt it would not do when Cait and Nolan began "the frolic".  There needed to be a mood change.  So we set to composing.  We would pick a chord we liked, then Janna would create one measure of melody to match, then we would choose another chord.  The whole thing felt terribly unconnected, but when we came back to it later it seemed perfect.  We followed this pattern for the rest of the film, each sister taking the lead at different times, and contributing to the film in her own unique way.  Krista contribued a lot of the original music.  We often relied on our intuition to tell us whether a song fit and also got opinions of our family.  Sometimes we would pick a time signature or key we felt fit the mood of a scene and search through the 900 some odd tunes in our Irish session tune book.  Our first love is arranging Celtic music and in our searches we found many new gems to add to our permanent repertoire.

Unfortunately, we were never able to watch any of the filming because we live 2 1/2 hours away.  We did all our "business" with the director over the phone.  Because we are friends too, not just project associates, our calls would often total to over 60 minutes!  Towards the end of the project, we got to meet the film crew on our way back from another event in Washington.  It was great fun to share experiences and meet the people who owned the faces we had been analyzing and studying for the past few months!  Later, after the film was complete, we shared in a home-school graduation celebration with the families who worked on the film.  We danced with "the Vikings", met the wonderful parents supporting the project, and watched the film together.  How special to be able to celebrate the completion of the movie together!

An aquaintance generously donated his time and recording equipment to the make the soundtrack possible.  We battled deadlines and computer crashes and we are so thankful for Norvin's perseverance and late nights!

Creating the soundtrack for Never be Shaken was an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience.  It required a lot of long hours and perseverance but we will be forever thankful we had this opportunity!

 Never be Shaken:

The Story

During the late 10th century on the coast of Ireland, a young Viking, Henrik, follows the destructive path of his father.  On his raid, he captures fifteen-year-old Cait Kincaid and her brother Nolan.  Unknown to the Vikings, their ships now carry God-honoring Christians back to their villages in Norway.  Cait and Nolan are separated, but their father's noble legacy binds his family together.  Throughout the next few years, Cait is lovingly cared for by her new friend, Henrik's sister.  When the opportunity comes for her to return home, Cait is asked to say, and she realizes that she has come to love and forgive the raider she once hated.  She remembers the words of her father and knows the answer to the question: never be shaken.
